Spotlight on Talent: Lucy Jones
Lucy Jones
Studied BTEC Level 3 Fashion, now working as a Designer at Brady Bags.
From a young age it was always Lucy’s dream to work in Fashion, but it’s a project and work experience placement she did here that helped her land her first break in the competitive industry.
“Fashion has always played a big part in my life so when I came to an open day here and saw the facilities in the fashion department, I was amazed. The computers all have the latest high quality software to help you design outfits and there are lots of different types of sewing machines to create garments.
“It’s such a great environment to learn in and I felt welcome from the first minute I came here. Classmates were always supportive and full of praise for others’ work, which was great to see and helped boost my confidence in my own skills.
“I enjoyed every part of the course, from gathering research using multiple media and combining this with my own ideas to create something unique and personal to me. I loved experimenting with colourways and fabrics to see how the final garment would look. The course taught me to express my creativity and individuality. And it’s this that got me noticed by Brady Bags, who are now my employer, during a project they set our class.
“After finishing this course, I was planning to go to university but then I was offered my dream job as a full time designer, which was amazing and very surreal. I started the job immediately after I completed the course and have already made so much progress with my career.
“One of my designs is already being pitched in Asia and in my role I’ve also been given responsibility for designing brochures, catalogues, price lists and looking after the company’s social media posts. I wouldn’t have achieved all of this and made a start on my career at such as young age without the help of Walsall College!”
