Spotlight on Talent – Chloe Webb

Studied: Level 2 Pharmacy Services Assistant Apprenticeship Standard and Level 3 Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship Standard
Progression: Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician
From early on in her Apprenticeship, Chloe Webb became aware of the diverse roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians beyond working in dispensaries.
Her career journey showcases this. She started out as a pharmacy services assistant then progressed into dispensary team leader roles in a hospital setting.
“I’ve gone from having a full hands-on, patient-facing role in a hospital dispensary reception area to working in another dispensary while also doing ward rotations,” said Chloe. “While I was there, I also became involved in a total parental nutrition (TPN) programme for patients unable to eat or drink enough by mouth. These are things that people often don’t realise pharmacy services professionals are involved in, but they’re an important and rewarding part of our job.”
As Chloe’s career advanced, so did her pharmacy-based studies which she completed through Walsall College.
“The Level 3 qualification involves a bigger ‘off the job’ commitment,” continued Chloe. “There are more assignments and exams to complete but this does mean you can do more in the pharmacy setting you are working in or you can move somewhere new.
“There’s no limit on the hospital bands you can progress to. The emphasis on continuous patient care is growing and there’s an increasing need to ease the workload in GP surgeries. Doors are opening all the time for people with pharmacy skills and experience.”
Chloe is around six months into her role as Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician. It is a role that sees her overseeing the procurement, administration and monitoring of medicines for a hospital’s sectioned patients while supporting her team.
Her five years’ experience has inspired her to explore ways to improve medicines management processes and enhance staff training practices.
“I definitely feel able to accomplish more,” said Chloe.
“It was my boyfriend’s mum who first introduced to the idea of a career in pharmacy. The way she described the care provided in this field and the sense of achievement that comes from helping improve someone’s condition resonated with me.
“I recommend the Apprenticeship route as an excellent way to help make a difference and build a fulfilling career where new opportunities open up all the time.”
