Spotlight on Talent – Babita Rani

Studying – Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship Standard while working as a property maintenance assistant at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
When Babita’s seven-month role in the catering department at Edward Street Hospital in West Bromwich ended, she was encouraged to explore other opportunities within the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. An Apprenticeship vacancy with the estates team stood out.
“DIY has always been a passion of mine,” said Babita. “I was excited by the opportunity to develop my skills professionally and on a larger scale.”
As part of her Apprenticeship, Babita receives training in Walsall College’s plastering, brickwork and painting and decorating workshops. She also studies functional skills maths and English.
“I’m enjoying every moment, including my training days at the college,” she said.
“Before taking a break to raise my children, I worked in hairdressing and barbering. It’s nice to have a permanent role again, especially one that offers so many opportunities to learn. The work can sometimes be physically demanding, but that’s just one aspect of the job.
“The best part of all is the people I meet and work with—colleagues, patients, and their families. They make every day more rewarding.”
As a mum of three working in construction, Babita has experienced moments when people stop in their tracks after noticing her hard at work.
“People have come up to me, surprised to see me doing this job, but I don’t mind,” said Babita.
“Everyone is always supportive. Some women have been so inspired that they’ve even asked my supervisor about opportunities to join our team.”
