Spotlight on Talent – Grace Tong

Studying: Level 3 Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship Standard while working at Cutter & Co
A career in payroll seemed like the ideal next step for Grace Tong after completing a business studies course at college. She knew she liked to plan, organise and work in an ordered way—qualities that all suited this sector.
Beginning her career as an apprentice also seemed ideal. Grace felt that being in a work environment would help further develop her skills and confidence.
And she was right on both counts.
Since joining chartered accountants, Cutter and Co. as a payroll apprentice, Grace has been proactively learning the intricacies of payroll, from handling tax codes and National Insurance contributions to manually calculating gross and net pay.
“Starting as an apprentice has been eye-opening,” said Grace. “I’ve gained confidence in payroll calculations, mastered tax code classifications, and learned to stay compliant with legal requirements—all while receiving invaluable support from my college tutor and colleagues.”
Manual payroll calculations now feel more manageable.
“I can manually calculate gross pay, deductions, and net pay,” continued Grace. “I also understand how to handle overtime, bonuses, and statutory deductions. I’ve learned to take advantage of the gov.uk website, as their calculators are great checks for my calculations.”
Grace speaks highly of her online lessons and her vocational coach, Debbie, who she credits with providing valuable support and guidance.
“Whenever we have queries, Debbie explains things in detail, breaking down the scenarios and calculations,” said Grace. “She is always there to offer a different perspective if the answer isn’t calculating the way we expect.”
Grace continued, “The entire virtual learning environment is great. All the modules you study are highly interactive, whether that’s engaging with the person delivering PowerPoints or doing quizzes and tests along the way.”
“The off-the-job training reinforces what you do day-to-day. And there’s a full-circle moment when it all clicks into place. It reinforces that you’re doing the right things—and doing them well.”
Reflecting on her journey, Grace expresses gratitude for the opportunities she’s been given and the progress she’s made.
“I’d say an apprenticeship is the right way to go,” said Grace. “This is a pathway that benefits you more than you might think. Not only are you learning skills related to your job role and sector, but you’re learning how to be proactive, a good communicator and more confident.”
“You’re also showing an employer how capable, reliable and trustworthy you are.”
After completing her qualification, Grace is keen to continue learning while exploring other areas of the accountancy sector.
“The great thing about working for an accountancy firm is that there are so many different areas to explore, including bookkeeping, accountancy, personal tax and administration,” added Grace.
“It’s a real highlight when I’ve completed a task on my own without asking anyone for help. I’m keen to have more moments like these, so I’m open to continuing to learn new skills and understanding more about the whole business.”
