Bridges Project helps Harmit nurse her career ambitions
“I have had a lot of support from staff on the Bridges Project. Without Bridges, I would not have had the confidence to overcome the barriers I faced. Now I continue to push myself to achieve my goals in life.”
Harmit worked as a qualified nurse in her home country of India. On moving to the UK, she hoped to gain a nursing job, only to discover that her qualifications were not recognised here.
She became a single, stay-at-home mother raising her two children. She completed an ESOL course to improve her English, but felt unfulfilled with her life. Although she lacked confidence and self-belief, she knew she wanted more.
Harmit enrolled onto the Bridges Project at Walsall College, completing the “It’s All About You” workshop programme. This helped her build her confidence, learn about fitness and mental wellbeing and interact with others similar to herself.
Harmit’s heart was still set on working as a nurse so, with support from the Bridges team, she made contact with a local hospital and is now volunteering in their A&E department and loving it. Harmit is gaining lots of valuable experience and intends to use this as a step forward to getting the job she really wants.
