Spotlight on Talent: Daniel Ali

Studied : Level 1-3, HNC, HND and a Top-up Degree in Computing
Progression : ICT Systems Developer for the NHS Blood and Transplant unit (NHSBT).
Daniel came to Walsall College in 2012, following a recommendation from a close friend. Impressed by its Outstanding reputation, Daniel applied for a Level 1 course in Computing. He liked it so much, he stayed on to complete level 2 to level 5, including his Degree.
“I liked the small comfortable environment the College provides. Plus the course was cheaper, which was a huge factor in me choosing to undertake my HNC, HND and Degree here.
The one-to-one support I received from tutors was extremely helpful. They would tell me where I was going wrong, which allowed for a lot of self-reflection to happen. My personal development was probably the most valuable thing I got out of the course. I understand myself more.”
After graduating with top marks, Daniel applied to several graduate agencies and found a job at the NHS Blood and Transplant unit as a Graduate ICT Systems Developer. There, he is making use of his skills working on numerous projects that will make a huge difference in people’s lives.
“My team and I are developing new systems to replace old ones. My biggest project is a new system that will manage blood donations and file customer complaints. In a few months, I will be testing another system with the prospect of making effective modifications.
“After three months of training, I realised that I’m working on something that makes a difference. It saves people’s lives. Without our systems, it wouldn’t be possible for blood transfusions or organ transplants to take place.
“I’ve seen stories pop up on my Facebook feed, one was about a three-year-old child that was really struggling and near to death. Due to blood transfusions, they got their life back. Knowing that I’m a small piece of this big picture of helping individuals is the most rewarding part of my job. It’s something to wake up to in the morning.”
