Logo look inspires students to get a-head

A Black Country and Birmingham-based barbers used a college’s logo to make a lasting impression on its students. Kem Unisex Salon shaved Walsall College’s logo into the head of ‘a client’ during an on-campus demonstration for trainee barbers and hairdressers.
It took around 90 minutes to create the wings-based logo in a skin fade style using detailers and trimmers, a logo template, plus black and red sprays and an illuminator.
“We loved the idea of bringing the college logo to life,” said Kem Johnson, founder and owner of Kem Unisex Salon. “Our barber, Reuben and myself had recently styled the Birmingham Commonwealth Games logo on a client and this had gone down really well.”
The salon team also showcased other hair techniques. Sandra and Ida from the Darlaston branch showed students how to stitch braid. Ashaun, a former Walsall College student demonstrated his fade cut techniques while sharing career insights and advice on products.
Kem added: “I’m passionate about inspiring young people and those starting out in the hair and barbering industry to really make a go of their careers.
“The salon has supported Walsall College for a few years now with masterclasses, work experience and job opportunities. It’s always exciting seeing individuals combine their classroom learning with shop floor-based training. We encourage our trainees to be fully part of our vibrant atmosphere while they gain the experience to flourish professionally in the future.
“The demonstrations we held are just one example of how students can improve further.”
Lecturer, Nichola Arrowsmith said: “Kem and his super-talented team were brilliant at showing students how dedicated and enthusiastic they are about their work and how success has come their way.”
She added: “Creativity and individuality are so important in our industry, along with taking the time to develop your skills as a stylist. We’re grateful to the salon for using something as unique and personal as our college logo to enhance our students’ learning and development.”
