Spotlight on Talent – Ashaun Kaul
Studied: Level 2 Diploma in Barbering
Progression: Barber at Kem Unisex Salon
Ashaun Kaul credits his growing success as a barber to the vibrant working environment he is a part of at Kem and Reuben Unisex Salon, Darlaston. He also looks to Walsall College for helping him develop the essential skills that helped him turn professional.
“I’d always been a fan of barbering growing up and was doing my friends’ hair,” said Ashaun. “I wouldn’t have got where I am today without having come to Walsall College first.”
He continued: “My Level 2 qualification helped me develop basic skills that makes you stand out as a professional. Things like sectioning hair properly, cutting long hair and everything to do with customer service.
“You learn about a range of hair types and styles so you’re prepared for anything once you’re in work.”
“I’m glad I went through my exams and got qualified. Having that credit to my name means something no matter what happens.”
Since being taken on as a trainee by Kem and Reuben Unisex Salon, Ashaun says his work ethic is at its highest level.
“Barbering and hairdressing takes a lot of practice,” he said. “You have to put in the effort, be patient and stick with it.”
“It’s a lot easier when you’re surrounded by such a talented team.”
Ashaun gives credit to his colleague, Kie and manager, Reuben too.
“The lads have taken my echelon from good to great from me constantly watching them as a beginner to staying after work to complete 1-1 sessions to really perfect my craft. It’s not easy but the hard work does pay off in time. And you build up a solid client base like I have.”
“At the moment, I’m enjoying work with the team, creating and improving my technique. I love the idea of the salon opening a Dubai branch. It’s a long shot but we’ll see.”
