Why it’s the right time to become a graphic designer
If you’re looking for a career that promises creativity, flexibility and job security, then you’re in the right place. You’ve chosen a profession that is currently in high demand, with 80% of UK businesses believing design helps them stay competitive, according to the Creative Industries Council.
Aside from the fact that most starting salaries are higher than the national average, a career in graphic design allows you to focus on something you love to do, whilst learning and sharing ideas with fellow creatives. If you’re still not convinced, keep reading to discover more reasons why it’s the right time to pursue a career in graphic design.
According to Dribble, graphic design is the second most desired skill teams look for in business. Why? Because choosing the right brand identity, is probably one of the most crucial decisions a business will make and you’d be a huge part of that process.
As more businesses are making the move to the digital world, graphic designers are needed to bridge the gap between print and digital artwork. It also means you’re working on more varied projects – be it stationary, business cards, advertising, or signage.
There is so much creativity involved in this role. You never have to fear being without a job for too long (or even replaced by a robot!). Most designers have their own distinct style, which could never be automated, no matter how sophisticated the technology.
The great thing about a career in the graphic design industry is you never have to worry about being bored doing the same task everyday. Design programmes and even design trends are constantly evolving, so you’re always learning new skills. Most employers encourage this and often provide opportunities for further training.
And if you’re really passionate, you’ll see inspiration all around you. From billboards to bus adverts, you’ll be itching to figure out how to recreate anything of interest.
Like the role itself, there is lots of flexibility for progression and alternative career options. You might choose to work for an agency where you are involved in a variety of different industries (this is usually a great starting point as it gives you the opportunity to learn new skills and decide what you want to focus on). There’s also the option to work ‘in-house’, where you’ll only work for one company. Or you could go freelance, which means you’ll be working for yourself- you’ll get to choose who you work with, but remember, you’ll be responsible for bringing in your own pay cheque!
If you decide you’re ready for a change, there’s also room for you to develop your skills into other parts of the industry, including web design, illustration or even photography.
There’s nothing more exciting than seeing all your hard work manifested in a piece of artwork for the world to see. Seeing something designed in context – on a billboard, website or bus shelter – is very thrilling. Perhaps your artwork could inspire the next generation of graphic designers?
