Spotlight on Talent – Laela Moore
Studied: Level 3 Applied Science with A Level Biology and A Level Chemistry
Progression: BSc (Hons) Neuroscience – Keele University
Laela Moore’s interest in the workings of the human brain peaked during her school years. Although she wasn’t able to deepen her understanding of this subject much at the time, she has made up for it during her college years and will continue doing so at university.
Her ambition is to become a research scientist and later a neurologist.
Laela credits her Science A Level hybrid pathway with preparing her for university by teaching her different study skills while enhancing her knowledge.
“My vocational Applied Science qualification taught me how to complete coursework assignments to a high standard. This is something that will be useful for me at university,” said Laela.
“A Levels require more academic context. It took time for me to find a learning style where I could absorb complex information and apply this knowledge in different ways. Now that I’ve cracked it, this is another thing I can take with me.”
Laela’s advice to other students on the A Level hybrid pathway is to spend time working out the learning approaches that suit them best and not to rush through different topics.
“I do think it takes time to absorb everything, no matter how clever you are,” said Laela. “It’s like building a house and putting all the foundations in place. It won’t be a house if you’re missing a window.
“Don’t rush to understand everything. And don’t be afraid to ask for help either.
“Lecturers here are so approachable. They’ll find extra study resources for you based on what you need and the way you like learning.”
The supportive environment and facilities are the stand-out memories from Laela’s time at the college.
“The lab work has been the best thing about my course,” added Laela. “We all got on well as a group and enjoyed being able to do more work in this environment.”
