Spotlight on Talent – Dylan Brown
Studied: Level 3 Business & Accounting
Progression: BSc Finance and Investment at Birmingham City University
By achieving his Level 3 Diploma in Business & Accounting at Walsall College and making small stock market investments throughout the year, Dylan Brown is positioning himself for a successful career in investment banking.
“I want to make my own money,” said Dylan. “I’ve been putting aside money from my part-time job to invest in the stock market so I can experience what this is like and learn how the process works in the long-term.”
Dylan interest in accounting and money management first developed in school. As there were no GCSE or alternative qualifications available to support his further studies in this area, he decided to come to college where the vocational technical qualification (VTQ) pathways in business and accounting and in business and marketing were offered.
“College has given me the chance to meet new people and start fresh,” said Dylan.
“I was already motivated to do well. Growing up, I saw family members struggle to money and I decided that wouldn’t be me.”
With his qualification involving a mix of coursework and exams, Dylan says he was proud of his ability to overcome any challenges he faced and to come away with Distinction grades.
“This course lets you prove yourself and see what you’re capable of,” continued Dylan.
“I know some people may not feel able or willing to put in extra effort. What I’d tell them is: don’t let anyone or anything hold you back.
“Don’t let others define who you are.
“You’re responsible for your own future, so it’s up to you to take advantage of what’s out there and make something of it.”
After achieving his degree, Dylan plans to work in investment banking so he can build up more knowledge and experience before eventually becoming self-employed.
