How to showcase your creativity with a career in painting and decorating
Decorating a home or a commercial space is no easy task. It takes a lot of thought, patience and creativity to properly illustrate a clients theme. Why? Because we know a well decorated home can massively impact how we feel. Recent research conducted by the Berkeley Group found that 32% of men and 40% of women stated that having a beautiful interior has a positive effect on their wellbeing.
Coupled with the government target for 300,000 new homes to be built each year in England alone, the demand for painters and decorators is steadily on the rise. This presents a great opportunity for painters and decorators to showcase their skills and creativity. Keep reading as we discover how you too could be part of a growing industry.
A second opinion
Although your clients may have an idea about the colours and shades they want, they will often look to you for a second opinion. Your experience and expertise will often be the deciding factor between choosing one shade over another. You’ll also have to be able to give constructive feedback on what might not work in a space, which could be down to a number of factors, including space or lighting.
Specialist artwork
If you’re particularly good at creating art, you could become a specialist in your field. Many homeowners look for personalised pieces of wall art, whether it is clouds painted in a baby nursery or a colour block arch in a kitchen. You could also let loose and create something completely unique that could become a focal point in a clients home.
Setting trends
Thanks to social media, it’s easier than ever to start a trend that could see your work in the homes of celebrities and homes across the world. For example, Mrs Hinch went viral after sharing her cleaning and home renovation hacks online. It’s also a great place to gather inspiration for future projects. You could start by documenting any renovations to your own home, whilst sharing any tips or hacks along the way – anything that might help people, or make it easier for them to decorate.
Personalised wallpaper
If you’ve ever struggled to find a wallpaper, you could always design your own! Whilst it may be time consuming painting each detail, it will be something completely unique and seeing the finished piece will be very rewarding.
Our homes reflect our personality and because we spend so much time in these spaces, it’s important they work as we want them to. At Walsall College we have a purpose built painting and decorating workshop, as well as The Bell Decorating Academy that can prepare you for a career in painting and decorating.
