Spotlight on Talent – Holo Moon
Studied: Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma in Art & Design
Progression: Games artist with Scanline VFX
When someone suggested Holo Moon study an art and design course, it set the former retail worker on a pathway involving a range of creative disciplines, culminating in a role working for a visual effects and animation company.
Her success is all the more remarkable as it came at a time when Holo had all but given up on a creative arts career.
“I’d spent five years working in retail while doing some commission-based portraiture on the side,” said Holo. “I genuinely thought I’d missed the boat on being able to train for, let alone experience a full-time, successful career in this field.
“But when I heard about Walsall College’s FAD course and the way it provided an overview of each art discipline, I was hooked.”
Holo praises her course for the ‘exploratory style’ it encouraged within fine art, photography, graphic design, textiles, printmaking and 3D design. She was also pleasantly surprised to discover other mature students had joined her course too.
The skills she acquired took her on to a video games and digital art-based course at Birmingham City University. With a final major project based around concept art production and character creation, Holo felt equipped to take her talent and experience into digital art.
During her time so far with Scanline VFX, Holo has worked with volmetric capture data for productions such as Black Adam and an Aquaman sequel.
Holo continued: “I’d recommend the FAD course to anyone interested in art who is not quite sure which direction to take their work, or who wants more experience, guidance and opportunities to experiment. You’ll be amazed where the course takes you. You’ll discover so much about yourself and about the wider industry.”
