Spotlight on Talent : Harvin Sandhu
Studied: Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Public Services
Progression: Trainee operational response officer at West Midlands Police
Harvin came to Walsall College with the aim of working in public services. He just didn’t yet know which capacity this would be in.
When his Level 3 course came to an end, his decision was made. A further four years on, he is joining his West Midlands Police.
“I achieved my ambitions thanks to the college,” said Harvin. “My experiences on the course prepared me for university and my future role.”
Harvin also credits the college with helping him become more confident. He recalled how his course-related activities would push him out of his comfort zone.
“I faced my fear of water sports head on by going canoeing and wakeboarding,” said Harvin. “I experienced a great feeling of accomplishment afterwards.
“And while coursework like my dissertation could be challenging, it helped me be more disciplined and to manage my time better.
“On top of this, college led to me forming great friendships with people I’m still in contact with now.”
Following a degree from Birmingham City University in policing, criminology and investigations, Harvin was in a strong position to apply to join the police force. His 2020 application was successful.
He is part way through a 10-week training course which will lead to him becoming an operational response officer.
His training includes shadowing an experienced police officer to help him gain a better understanding of the variety of incidents he will be expected to deal with in future.
“I definitely encourage anyone thinking of joining Walsall College to do so,” added Harvin. “The staff are great and the environment is amazing. You leave with the knowledge, experience, and skills for your future ambitions.”
