Spotlight on Talent – Eve Wilkes

Studied: Level 3 Certificate in Paralegal Practice
Progression: Case handler
Eve Wilkes was prompted to become an adult student by the desire to pursue a career she would enjoy and that would keep her in employment for the rest of her working life. Initially she felt she was too old to be a student again and was worried her attempt to gain qualifications would come to nothing.
Her fears were unfounded. On completing her paralegal practice qualification along with Functional Skills English and maths, she gained a role as a case handler with medical company, Curian.
“I wouldn’t be in this job if it wasn’t for the college,” said Eve. “My qualifications opened doors for me.
“It relates to other jobs too involving the law, prison and probation service, so if I ever want to move into another area, I have plenty of options,”
Eve is also grateful to the college for her success in being offered her job at Curian, where she is involved in supporting solicitors and insurers with their policies.
“My tutor, Richard prepped me for my job interview, which was a massive help,” said Eve. “There’s a good support system in place at the college.
“On top of this, I have a friendship circle I never would have imagined forming before this.”
The increased self-belief is the most crucial thing of all to come out of Eve’s student journey.
The mother of two and former retail worker had experienced anxiety and depression in the past. This impacted on her feelings of isolation and anxiety during the pandemic, so that when she first started her studies, she was nervous about speaking in class.
“I would definitely say I’m a changed person after coming to college and being back in work,” Eve continued.
“I’m dealing with solicitors over the phone all the time at work and feel confident when I’m doing this. An understanding of legal terminology through my qualification is an advantage. Having settled in at Curian, I’ve been given more responsibility and I’m enjoying the busy nature of my work.”
Eve added: “I would urge anyone who’d like to train for a new job or career to just do it. It really will transform your life.”
