Spotlight on Talent : James Roberts

James Roberts
Studied: Level 2 Diploma in Sport
Progression: Level 3 Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development
As a teenager on a local football team, James Roberts would find it easy to look up to his coach.Β He admired the way the coach could put James and his teammates through a variety of training activities.Β He also liked how the coach adapted sessions to suit each playersβ needs so they could keep improving.
This proactive approach has inspired James to become a coach himself.Β And his college studies are providing countless opportunities for him to kickstart his career.
βWork experience is part of the collegeβs sports courses,β said James.Β βI started doing some voluntary coaching at my old primary school.Β I was also involved with The Inspire Group who offer football training to 4-11 year-olds.
βFrom here, I got to help coach boys and girls after school and after this, during the Easter holidays.β
Now, James is actively involved in The Inspire Groupβs two-week summer camp activities at Walsall Arboretum and Willenhall Memorial Park.
βThe more coaching I do, the more beneficial I find it,β continued James.
The coaching skills James has been developing on the pitch are supported by the knowledge he has gained in the classroom.
James explained: βA module on supporting clients taught me how to outline a strategy for every stage of a coaching session.Β I’ve been assessed on how I might deliver warm ups and free fundamentals, followed by an actual activity and cool down.Β Iβve got much more confidence as a coach.β
βStudying at college is great,β added James.Β βIβm with people who love sport as much as I do.Β My teachers are always supportive too.Β They never just leave you to get on with something; help is available when you need it.
James is working towards achieving the FA Level 1 in Coaching Football. Β The Inspire Group are also inviting him to participate in their Multi Sport Tour.
