Public Services Careers Week brings jobs even more to life

A combination of site visits and an in-house event made for a successful Public Services Careers Week at Walsall College.

During the week, students visited the West Bromwich Army Reserve Centre, Steelhouse Lane Police Station and Walsall Fire Station.  The visits provided detailed insights into what it is like to work in these environments and be part of these teams.

Opportunities to try out different kit, equipment and operational facilities also improved their understanding of what their future day-to-day working lives could involve.

A Careers Day also took place at the college, with representatives from Walsall College Security, West Midlands Police Service, the Armed Forces and West Midlands Fire Service speaking to students abut volunteering opportunities and different jobs they could take up.  Local universities also attended to share information about university-level public services courses.

Lecturer, Gemma Attenborrow said: “This Careers Week reinforces the end goals these students are working towards.  Having developed their knowledge during the college year so far, they were able to ask the public services personnel they met some insightful questions about the challenges and rewards of being in their roles.

“The students have come away feeling even more excited and focused about their future ambitions.”
