Students rebuild workshop bays for industry experience

Brickwork students and apprentices at Walsall College worked together with Electrical students to give their working space a revamp, and rebuilt the bays in the electrical workshop.
The Level 2 Brickwork students and apprentices (First and second years) were given the live brief when the bays in the workshop became unfit to be used for assessment.
Brickwork students worked with those studying electrical installation to negotiate the dates and timings of the project. The Brickwork students also carried out Health and Safety checks, and were tasked to estimate the materials needed, as well as costings.
The project is one of the industry experience opportunities the electrical and construction teams have provided to their students.
Michael Mitchell, Curriculum Manager for Electrical Installations, said: “We’re very proud of what the brickwork students and apprentices have achieved. We now have new walls to ensure assessment can be carried out in an effective and efficient manner.
The projects has also afforded the electrical students an insight into other trades, their way of working and to experience what it would be like to work on an actual site.
I would like to thank the brickwork department for their hard work and professionalism on this project. I look forward to working with them and other trade areas on projects in the future which allow the students to work on live jobs whilst ensuring that the project is cost effective.”
Barry Hill, Curriculum Manager for Construction, said: “Our students have treated this opportunity as a ‘real job’ and have carried it out in a very professional manner.
We’re impressed with the high standard of work they have produced, which was in line with industry requirements. Students have successfully showcased their skills, knowledge and professional manner, and will be an asset to the industry.”
