Sports students take on Daily Mile stewarding duties

Sports students at Walsall College stepped out in hi-vis jackets and provided side-line support to school students participating in an Inspire Cross Country and Daily Mile event held at Walsall Arboretum.
The event, held for the second-year running, was a warm-up for the Walsall School Games. It saw Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students from 16 schools complete a one-mile course, joined by some of their teachers and parents.
14 of the college’s Level 2 and 3 students took up positions along the route so that the runners could follow their course correctly and safely.
In between the races, families engaged with representatives from Walsall Outdoor Spaces and Walsall Running Club who were raising awareness of some of the local initiatives and activities available to encourage people to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.
Student, Amy Wharton was one of the stewards.
“This is the first time I’ve done this role at a sports event, and it was nice seeing the children give it their all.
“I’m interested in coaching young children in future so being a steward, helping and encouraging people while they’re being active and while they’re being active with others was a good experience for me.”
Student and aspiring personal trainer, Charlie Rudd also found his voluntary role at the event helpful.
“I’ve realised that fitness isn’t just about being in one-to-one or small group sessions, but that bigger events like this also make a difference to how children think about exercise and fitness and are motivated to be involved.
“From my college course, I already know that following good health and fitness habits from an early age and having a routine are important. Hopefully, these children have seen what’s possible and will think about what they can do to stay active.”
