Walsall Town Deal work opportunities explored by jobseekers and students at careers event

Over 375 people attended an event at Walsall College to explore work opportunities linked to Walsall Town Deal regeneration projects.

The Construction Jobs and Careers Fair was organised by Walsall Works, the DWP, whg and the college.  Jobseekers and students on construction trade programmes came face to face with employers showcasing vacancies, apprenticeships and other training to help them begin their careers or progress into new roles.

Walsall is in the middle of a £1.5 billion programme of transformation that will create opportunities for jobs, training and business and boost the local economy, This was the first time businesses were able to showcase their upcoming contracts and skills requirements to both potential workforces, industry peers and partners.

Corrie Squire, Skills, Training and Employment Manager at the College said: “Collaborative working is key to ensuring local people and businesses have every opportunity to thrive through the Walsall Town Deal projects.  The event was a major step towards raising awareness of the specific projects taking place, the work involved and how people play their part – whether that’s as workers, contractors, suppliers, buyers, trainers and recruiters.  With the necessary resources in place, we can ensure these projects culminate in the prosperous and vibrant town we all want to see in future.”

Employers promoting jobs and training opportunities included Balfour Beatty VINCI, United Infrastructure, The Tara Group, Kier, Travis Perkins and Crown Highways.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council added: “Our role is to make sure local people are first in line for the jobs created by Walsall’s regeneration.  This event demonstrated how strong partnerships can translate major investment into real career opportunities for our residents.”
