Spotlight on Talent – Taryn-Jeffrey Brock

Studying – Roofing Apprenticeship Standard
When Taryn-Jeffrey Brock’s roofing instructor suggested that he take part in some national industry competitions, the roofing apprentice’s response was ‘Why not? What have I got to lose?’
His calm approach paid off. The 20-year-old came third in the southwest regional qualifiers for SkillBuild UK 2025 and was second reserve for the national finals of BMI Apprentice of the Year.
He achieved these accolades while continuing his off-the-job training for a Level 2 Roofing Apprenticeship Standard. which includes a Level 2 Roof Slating and Tiling qualification
“The competitions were a great experience for me and meant I’m more confident now in this type of environment,” said Taryn who had previously worked as a landscape gardener.
Skillbuild, delivered by CITB saw Taryn complete a set task relevant to roofing within a seven-hour time frame. This was designed to test his technical abilities, time management, character and commitment.
And at BMI Apprentice of the Year, his two-day roofing challenge covered technical ability, teamwork, presentation skills, marketing and commercial acumen.
“Initially it was nerve-wracking being a competitor but once I’d got started, I just went at my own pace and took the view that I’d finish where I finish,” continued Taryn.
Taryn was also grateful to have the support of his employer and mentor who came along to the competitions to follow his progress.
His experience at these competitions and off the job training at Construction College Midlands, along with his day-to-day work are all setting Taryn up for a successful future.
“The great thing about being an apprentice at Construction College Midlands is that you learn techniques that you might not yet have covered working on site,” added Taryn. “You also get to experience a mix of styles in terms of how the tutors approach a certain job compared to your boss or mentor on site. This gives you more options or a mix of ways to then approach and complete your own work. I can look at things with more perspective.
”It’s rewarding to finish a roofing job, know there’s no leaks, you’ve pointed the muck work and it’s all nice and smooth.”
