Spotlight on Talent – Mia Roberts

Studied: Level 2 Air Cabin Crew and Level 2 in Aviation
Progression: Passenger service agent
Although Mia Roberts started out wanting to work in cabin crew, she now loves being ground level working as a passenger service agent at Birmingham Airport.
She credits her time at Walsall College for preparing her for this role.
“I’d recommend my college courses to others,” said Mia. “The knowledge I gained crossed over into my induction training at the airport. This made it easier for me to settle into the job and follow all the processes correctly.”
Mia continued: “Studying cabin crew and aviation also meant I could learn about the different jobs available in these areas. This helps you fully understand which direction you want your career to follow. And when once you are in work, you have a better idea of what your colleagues do.”
When Mia first started at the airport, her main challenge was ensuring passengers followed health, safety, and security measures during check-in. A year later, after handling a wide range of customer enquiries and issues with luggage and passports, she now has a much deeper understanding of the procedures and regulations in place.
The passengers and her colleagues are the best thing about her job, according to Mia.
“I learn and see new things every day, mainly through the people I come across,” said Mia. “Their personalities, cultures and belief systems are so interesting. It’s why I’m happy to continue in this role for a while, especially as I can move across to other airlines if I want to.
“That said, I may consider cabin crew in future. The qualifications and transferrable skills I have will hopefully make this career move easier to manage.”
