Spotlight on Talent – Eilidh Ewing

Studied: Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science
Progression: BSc Homs Paramedic Science – University of Staffordshire
As a paramedic science undergraduate who is also completing placements with West Midlands Ambulance Service, Eilidh Ewing believes she is ‘living the dream’. It is a position she has aspired to since Year 10 of her school days.
“My first day on placement has been the biggest and proudest moment of my student life so far,” said Eilidh.
“I was a nervous wreck in the run up to the day itself because it meant so much to me. Then once I was out on the road with paramedics, it just felt amazing. It made me fall in love with the job even more.”
“I feel like this is my time to shine and I want to make the most of the opportunity.”
Eilidh progressed to her degree after studying Applied Science at Walsall College. She felt she was able to nurture her career ambitions in paramedic science here and receive the support she needed to achieve her goals.
“I absolutely would recommend the college to other students, no matter what your aspirations are,” said Eilidh.
“Lecturers genuinely care about getting you to where you want to be. They appreciate what you’re interested in and support you in line with this.
“This is important and helpful for those who lack confidence or don’t always have a positive mindset. I myself was in this position and my lecturers gave me the motivation and determination I needed.”
Eilidh’s placements with West Midlands Ambulance Service will run throughout her three-year degree. Some of these will be carried out at Walsall Manor Hospital in the acute medical unit and on other wards as well as in community locations such as local schools.
On completing her paramedic science degree, Eilidh aims to become a full-time paramedic and will start applying for roles. She hopes to practice the role for a few years before embarking on the relevant training to be able to join the Air Ambulance.
