Seddon bring world of work to life for Walsall College students

A building expansion project for a Walsall school has provided two Walsall College students with ‘inspirational’ work experience. Seddon welcomed Josh Gordon and Bradley Jackson for a ten-day placement at Oakwood School in Walsall Wood.
The expansion project has seen the school undergo a single-storey extension to add two classrooms, a hygiene room, a medical room and a new link corridor.
Supported by project manager, Sean Hall. Josh and Bradley gained an overview of each working stage of the expansion and how workers representing electrical, plumbing and carpentry have played their part.
With both students coming to the end of their Level 2 building maintenance operative qualifications, they are now well-placed to decide their next career steps.
“It’s been so helpful seeing just how much goes on when you’re onsite and to be able to learn things from different trades,” said Bradley. “Sean also helped me understand everything happening in the background by taking me along to meetings and working with me in the site office. Overall, it’s inspired me to go down the carpentry route and that’s what I hope to study in September.”
Josh also enjoyed being onsite and working with representatives from Seddon’s supply chain.
“Part of me expected the atmosphere on site to be intense and really busy, but everyone was welcoming and easy to get on with,” said Josh. “I helped with some of the groundworks and air con fittings which showed me how different companies can work on big projects like this.
“I am still exploring my options in terms of looking for an apprenticeship once I’ve finished my course. This work experience gives me confidence that I can do this work and be part of a team.”
