Apprentice duo aiming high at Skill Build 2025

Two roofing apprentices gaining their qualifications with Construction College Midlands (CCM) are preparing to take part in the UK’s largest and longest-running multi-trade skills competition.

SkillBuild, delivered by CITB sees the country’s top construction-based learners and apprentices battle it out to be crowned winners of their chosen trade.

Taryn Jeffrey-Brock of Bicester Roofing is participating in the regional qualifiers at Exeter College while Charlie Swain from Ven Construction in Mansfield will compete at Leeds College.

On the day, they will be asked to complete a set task relevant to roofing within a seven-hour time frame. The eight highest-scoring competitors will then go through to the SkillBuild National Final.

Darren Shakespeare, Vocational Coach at Construction College Midlands said: “The CCM team and I are pleased that Taryn and Charlie are stepping up to represent the college and their employers at such a high-profile event. It will be an excellent test of their skills and abilities, plus an opportunity to network and explore other areas of industry.

“We look forward to seeing what they achieve.”

Taryn and Charlie are studying the Roofing Apprenticeship Standard with Construction College Midlands which includes a Level 2 Roof Slating and Tiling qualification.

Running for over 40 years, SkillBuild is a series of regional competitions held across four nations, culminating in a National Final competition. Over 1,000 learners competed in 2024.

As each level of the competition progresses, competitors will not only be tested on their technical abilities, but on their time management, character and commitment. The competitions can help build confidence, self-esteem and vital life skills.
