Summer job success for T Level student, Abida
A Walsall College student is continuing her on-the-job learning over the summer after taking up a placement with engineering and construction company, VolkerFitzpatrick.
Abida Miah is spending six weeks in Aston, supporting project teams providing strengthening and refurbishment works to the A38(M) Tame Valley Viaduct.
Earlier this year, the 17-year-old began an industry placement with VolkerFitzpatrick as part of her T Level course in Construction – Design, Surveying and Planning. Her work ethic and enthusiasm impressed everyone so much, including the project manager and contracts manager, that she was offered this summer role.
Abigail Elden, Stakeholder and Social Value Coordinator at VolkerFitzpatrick said that Abida is the first ever T Level student to be offered a paid placement with them.
“We’re pleased to continue playing a small part in the way Abida develops further industry insights and shapes her career path,” she said.
“This extra time with us will deepen her understanding of the resources involved in a project of this scope, the deadlines we’re working to and the milestones we’re achieving along the way.
“She’ll also be more aware of the community initiatives we’re involved in, including a sleepout to raise money for the homeless and fundraising for local community groups.”
Abida’s duties so far have involved producing construction method statements describing how activities are being carried out safely. Plus, other health and safety reports and project programming work. She has also attended team meetings which she says is boosting her project knowledge and understanding of industry terminology.
“I’m excited to be on this summer internship as an add-on to my industry placement,” said Abida. “I enjoy coming in each morning and tackling different jobs.
‘Everyone has been so welcoming. Their support has been instrumental in my development.
“My ambition is to explore civil engineering with aspirations of going into project management, so this experience with a large contractor like VolkerFitzpatrick aligns well with these goals.
“I’m grateful to a progressive company like VolkerFitzpatrick for this amazing opportunity and continuous support which is helping me to get ahead.”
