Spotlight on Talent : Olivia Bournes

Progression: Level 2 Travel & Tourism

Olivia Bournes decided not to take the safe option.  This is paying off for her in lots of ways.

Since leaving school in Year 11, she has re-sat and passed GCSE English and maths.  And through her main studies, she is developing an interest in the customer service side of the travel industry.

“I really like the idea of working in a travel agents,” said Olivia.  “It’s all thanks to college.  I came here because I wanted something different.”

By exploring options beyond her school sixth form, Olivia is benefitting socially too.  She is making new friends and feels more comfortable talking to other adults she has only met a few times.

Olivia also says she is a more positive person.

“My business administration course helped me become more confident,” she said.  “The team-working and role-play activities made it easier for me to know what to say to customers and how to build good relationships with them.

“And I did some office-based work experience at my old school.  This gave me a better understanding what I’d been learning.

“My travel course is closely linked to the industry, so this is doing the same thing.

“I’m already ahead with some of my assignments because I’m enjoying the work so much.  And my learning mentor gives me lots of support.  She keeps me focused and makes sure I understand what’s expected of me.

Olivia hopes to study the Level 3 travel and tourism course next.  Although, she believes in taking things one step at a time.

Olivia is happy to share her open-minded approach with others if it means taking the route that’s best for them.

“I’d definitely encourage everyone in Year 11 to make sure they take a good look at what’s out there before making a decision,” she continued.

“Don’t play it safe and do a course because you’ll be with people you know or in a place where you already feel settled.

“If you do see something you’d like to do, give it a try and see where it takes you.”
