New Signmaking Apprenticeship Standard making a name for itself
Walsall College is one of the first colleges in the country to offer an updated apprenticeship qualification in signmaking. The new signage technician standard is regarded by industry bodies and the college as providing more of an all-round approach to the profession. This will result in apprentices gaining a higher level of skills throughout their training.
With more parts of the new standard and qualification available to study online with improved resources, the college believes this is the ideal time for those new to, or already working in this field to complete the Level 3 qualification.
Clive Mitchell, Trainer/Assessor at Walsall College said: “This new standard is an industry game changer. While on the job training continues to be a key component of the apprenticeship, there is also a focus on the bigger picture and a wider set of skills.
“Through this, apprentices will explore the operational side of a business, as well as learn more about digital design and development processes. This ensures their careers and the businesses they represent are more sustainable.”
The new standard was introduced in November 2020, following consultations with signmaking industry bodies and employers. It supersedes the Intermediate and Advanced Signmaking Apprenticeship Framework and is a 24-month apprenticeship with three months’ end point assessment.
Also making the training more accessible is the government’s Apprenticeship Incentive Scheme. Under this new scheme, small to medium sized businesses will receive up to £3,000 for each new apprentice they recruit until 31st March 2021. This funding is in addition to any apprenticeship levy they are already entitled to.
Clive Mitchell added: “We welcome the opportunity to talk to employers about how to access this training and funding now, in readiness for when their clients reopen and/or rebrand their businesses for a new start.”
