Spotlight on Talent – Marcus Alarcon

Studied: Level 2 and 3 Automotive
Progression: Auto-technician at The Trade Centre UK
Marcus Alarcon believes he might not be where he is in his career today if it wasn’t for the work experience he completed at The Trade Centre UK (TCUK). His time at the Wednesbury branch led to him being offered part-time work in between his Walsall College studies.
Once he had achieved his Level 3 qualification, a full-time job followed.
Even now, having been in his role for two years, Marcus remains grateful that he was able to turn professional so soon after college.
“It would have been a lot harder to get into the industry without having done my work experience,” said Marcus.
“Most garages insist on you having at least one or two years’ experience under your belt. But if you’re new to industry, how are you meant to get experience?
That’s why the college was the ideal place to get started.”
Marcus continued: “I learned all the theory in class, got practical skills in the workshops, then had more hands-on experience at Trade Centre.
“I picked things up I could take back to college so it was much easier to achieve.”
Having become successful, Marcus urges others to take up any work experience opportunities that come their way.
“If you really are serious about being in the industry then you have to put yourself out there,” said Marcus.
“Even if you’re not confident about being with people you don’t know, or you’re not keen on working unless you’re getting paid, it’s still important to give it a go.
“It’s always worth your while in the end.
Marcus added: “Everyone gets on well in the workshops. Being here is a good way to meet other people who are as interested in cars as you are.
“And they want to do well.”
