Black History Month celebrated on campus

Classroom discussions, visual displays and a showcase event all took place in October at Walsall College to mark Black History Month.  The activities helped to commemorate, raise awareness and highlight the contributions, culture, history and achievements of Black people in the UK and across the world.

Abdul Rashid, Student Union member and Black History Month event volunteer explained: ”I think it’s important to share awareness of our past and the achievements of black people, especially when this has been in some challenging circumstances.  Events like this help us acknowledge that everyone is equal and should have a fair chance across every part of their lives.”

Organisations at the event included The Light Community Hub, youth development organisation, Lyfe Proof, community coffee shop, The Table, Blissful Bakes by Elisha, Laydidee’s Natural Skincare, Wiild Cinnamon Cards, Bev’s Afro Style Positive Attitude, Walsall Art Gallery and Walsall For All.

Steelpan Soloist, Mighty Jamma performed, as did artists from Lyfe Proof.

Special guest of The Light Community Hub was Sandra Bogle, star of Channel 4’s Gogglebox.  She was eager to convey the message about Black History and awareness of the Black experience being shared all the time.

She added: “Black history should be recognised every day across all our collective history and cultures.  It’s about coming together, communicating, educating one another and getting to know one another’s cultures.

“I encourage everyone to get involved, express how you feel and come together to live beautifully.”
