All students can access the Walsall College Job Shop, where our experienced staff will help them review the jobs, apprenticeships, traineeships and work experience opportunities available to them.

Employability courses are also available to local unemployed people who are receiving a working age benefit. You can be referred to Walsall College via your Jobcentre Plus Work Coach.

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a brilliant first step on the career path in many businesses. They are an excellent way of gaining nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage, and combine practical ‘hands-on’ experience with academic knowledge.
It’s now possible to do apprenticeship training from Level 2 right up to degree level:

Apprenticeship standard/framework - Level 2
Apprenticeship standard/framework - Level 3 (A Level equivalent)
Higher level apprenticeship - Level 4
Degree level apprenticeship - Level 6

How apprenticeships work

Apprenticeships mainly involve on-the-job training, 20% of your time will be spent working towards a qualification.

Here you’ll find some practical advice for employers on how they can recruit and train apprentices.

Traineeships

An alternative to full-time study

Traineeships provide an excellent opportunity for 16- 24 year olds to gain industry experience:

A Traineeship lasts around three months and is a combination of a work placement with distance/e-learning and practical sessions.

Five ways that a Traineeship can work for you:

  • They help learners develop their understanding of the world of work
  • They give learners the opportunity to show future employers what they have to offer
  • They place learners in a stronger position to progress onto an Apprenticeship or into employment
  • They open up new job/industry avenues
  • They boost earning and business potential

Learners will also have the chance to work towards their English and Maths if these qualifications have not already been gained.

For a springboard that leads to more confidence, new industry skills and exciting future opportunities, go forward with a traineeship.
