Paramedics Breathe Life Into Students’ Lesson

  • Categories 16-19s, Health & Social Care, News & Blog
  • Date 4th November 2016

Paramedics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service unit visited Walsall College to give Health and Social Care students an industry insight into the career.

Paramedics and Education and Training Officers, Krystle O’Brien and Sian Arrowsmith gave Level 3 students an overview of some of the incidents they have responded to, different conditions that patients might have and how they assess patients to decide if they can be treated at home or need hospital treatment.

The presentation also covered the skills and qualities paramedics need, including driving techniques, team working, communication and personable skills.

Curriculum Manager for Health and Social Care at Walsall College, Wendy Byron, said: “There are a wide range of career pathways students can follow with a Health and Social Care qualification. So as part of the course, we aim to expand their knowledge of as many of the options open to them as possible. Hearing first hand from industry experts working in the sector, helps to give students a deeper insight into what different jobs entail so they can make more informed decisions.”

Health and Social Care student, Michael Ford, said: “I haven’t considered becoming a paramedic before but I found this lesson really inspiring; it’s opened up my eyes about the importance of the role and what it involves.”
