Higher education graduates celebrate success

Walsall College’s Higher Education Student of the Year 2026 is Public Services graduate, Lily May Wood.

The HNC Public Services graduate was presented with her award at a ceremony for learners who achieved degree-level qualifications in 2025.  After completing a HND this summer, she is progressing on to a full honours degree in Policing and Intelligence at the University of Wolverhampton.

Rather than allowing a learning difference to define her and prevent her fulfilling her potential, Lily actively sought solutions to ensure she succeeded as a higher education student.  She embraced the use of assistive technologies, developed effective learning techniques and consistently pushed herself beyond her comfort zone.

“The award was a complete shock and made me so proud of all my hard work,” said Lily.

“My HNC was the best option I could have possibly chosen to start my degree with. It allows you to develop in unique ways giving not only educational development but personal as well.”

Walsall College’s Higher Education Class of 2025 celebrated their qualifications and course achievements during a special graduation ceremony held at Wisemore Campus.

They were awarded certificates for graduating from courses at Level 4 and above.  These included Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, full Honours Degrees as well as professionally accredited qualifications including accounting, education and training, management and paralegal practice.

Following these, Kyle completed a top-up degree in Acting for Stage and Screen and will be starting a PGCE in Drama, with the goal of drama teacher while pursuing acting opportunities.

“I was greatly inspired by my tutor, Paul Evans, to pursue a career in education,” said Kyle.  “His encouragement and passion for teaching showed me the positive impact a great teacher can have.

“I hope to keep developing as both an educator and a performer, working towards my dream of becoming a professional stage or screen actor.

“I would encourage anyone considering performing arts to study at Walsall College,” added Kyle.  “The facilities are excellent, from the performance spaces to the props workshop.  The opportunities to develop both performance and technical skills are fantastic, and, most importantly, the tutors genuinely care about helping every student reach their full potential.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support I received there.”
