Global bank gives students a view into the world of finance
Swedish bank Handelsbanken gave Walsall College Business students an insight into the inner workings of global banking.
Stephen Breen, Handelsbanken’s branch manager, visited the college’s business hub to deliver an inspiring talk to the College’s Level 3 students.
The presentation covered the history of the European bank, and the unique business model it employs, with decisions made locally and success being defined by satisfied customers.
Banking legislation and important regulations were also highlighted, which enabled students to recount what they had learnt from one of their Year 1 units on Financial Services Regulations, Ethics and Trends.
Stephen also discussed the range of services Handelsbanken offer to businesses and individuals, which was relevant to two core units on financial services.
To help students enter a career in finance, Stephen listed the skills and qualities Handelsbanken look for when they interview prospective candidates, and offered advice for students who have aspirations to work in banking.
Students were given the opportunity to ask Stephen questions during a Q & A session, with topics ranging from internships to careers available in the financial sector.
Last year, Handelsbanken opened its first branch in Walsall town centre, as part of the Stockholm-headquartered company’s expansion in the UK. It now has more than 206 branches nationwide.
Spearheaded by Stephen, the Walsall branch have a highly experienced banking team, who have over 100 years of experience.
Curriculum Manager for Business and Finance at Walsall College, Cordelle Taylor, said: “Students found the session extremely useful. It has given them a detailed insight into how the banking sector operates, and what skills and qualities they will need to develop into order to enter this very lucrative field. This is critical in helping students make decisions about their own futures, and the direction they wish to take.”
