Walsall College celebrates Equality and Diversity Week

Walsall College kicked off Equality and Diversity Week with a range of talks and activities, including a poignant presentation from the Naz and Matt Foundation – a charity that raises awareness of homophobia within religion.

The week-long event took place at the college’s Wisemore Campus, which offered students the opportunity to explore a range of topics and issues, including pregnancy, disabilities and stereotypes.

Equality and Diversity Week began with a powerful talk from Matt, co-founder from the Naz and Matt Foundation.

Founded in 2014, the charity aims to tackle homophobia and to help parents accept their children who identify as LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning or Intersex).

Throughout the week, former students provided information and activities on Hidden Disabilities, and students were encouraged to take part in the College’s Equality and Diversity quiz.

There were also video promotions across the College that challenge prejudice and discrimination, including ‘Love has no Boundaries’ and ‘Don’t put people in boxes’.

Carol Egan, Director of Student Journey at Walsall College, said: “As a college, we make it our mission to ensure students and staff can study and work in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. That means embracing values such as equality and diversity, democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect – both individually and as a community.

We hope students have taken something very valuable from the talk and activities we organised that week.”
