Quorn introduces new vegan option to catering students at masterclass

Quorn – the UK’s leading meat replacement brand - visited Walsall College to showcase its vegetarian recipes, including a new vegan option.

Denise Tollyfield, Home Economist at Quorn, gave Level 2 Hospitality students a demonstration on how to prepare a range of Quorn-based recipes, including Quorn Tikka Masala, Moroccan nuggets and marinated Quorn chicken with herb-infused rice.

Denise also delivered a talk on the on the health benefits of the Quorn brand, which are low in saturated fat and high in fibre.


To celebrate Veganuary – which encourages people to go vegan for 4 weeks this month – Denise introduced students to the new vegan Quorn option. Using the new addition to the company range, Denise prepared a delicious mince with spiced vegetables and garlic flatbread.

Students were then tasked to create their own meat-free dishes, using Quorn products and other healthy alternatives.

Quorn is raising its profile recently with Greggs Quorn Vegan Sausage Roll, which has generated a storm both online and in branches across the UK.


Denise Tollyfield said: “It’s an absolute joy to run these masterclasses at Walsall College. I’ve been running these classes for the past three years and each time, I’m amazed with what the students produce after my demonstrations, which is a testament to their aptitude for creating beautifully-presented dishes that have an interesting taste due to the mix of flavours.

The catering industry is on the lookout for new talent, and these hospitality and catering courses are a good way to develop the skills you need to start a career as a chef. I look forward to working with Walsall College again to run my next masterclass.”


David Higgins, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality and catering at Walsall College, said: “Students take part in several professional masterclasses throughout the year as they are a key part of the Hospitality and Catering course. They not only help trainee chefs to develop their skills and knowledge in the kitchen, but they also give them a deeper insight in to the different types of career opportunities available and realities of the industry, first-hand from experts currently working in the sector.

“We invited a representative from Quorn to give a presentation as it’s a brand that is growing quite rapidly and we feel it’s important for students to stay ahead of developments and trends in the industry, especially as vegan options are becoming more popular. This will help to ensure they are fully prepared when they start their careers.”
