Many of our students have found work after completing their studies at Walsall College. Charley Fowler has engineered a bright future, which all began with visit to our Open Day about how she can start a career in engineering.

Now working full-time as a Training Academy Development Technician at Patriot International, she’s got her sights set firmly on a rewarding future as the company expands.

The 19-year-old attended an Open Day at Walsall College three years ago and enrolled onto a BTEC Level 3 Engineering course, which helped her to develop the skills she needed to carve out a career in the industry.

“My course covered a wide variety of engineering and I managed to cover 17 topics including Further Mechanics and Vehicle Technology. I really enjoyed completing the extra six units too in order to achieve the extended diploma.”

As part of her course at Walsall College, Charley undertook a one-week work placement at Patriot International. Impressed with her work ethic and performance, the Oldbury-based company offered her a permanent job. She is now undergoing training as part of her job.

“It’s exciting working for Patriot International. I love carrying out maintenance on machines because I find it interesting to strip the machines down and see why things happen.

I work in the Training Academy, carrying out demonstrations for the technicians we train. This involves going on site to a power station or anything that requires pipework maintenance, and carrying out either bolting or machining in order to gain the relevant experience. Anything is achievable as long as you have the right mind set.”
