Full STEAM ahead during careers event

The creative side of the sciences and the scientific side of the arts was explored close up during a college wide event hosted by the college’s Careers Guidance Team.

Organisations representing science, technology, engineering and maths hosted have-a-go activities during a STEAM event.

Over 500 students got to experience robot lego building, a welding simulator and VR machine, science experiments and activities, automotive demos, plus a green screen experience hosted by the college’s media students.

Midland Metro Alliance demonstrated their tram simulator while a real live miniature working steam engine from Denver Light Railway was on display outside the campus.

Based over at The Hub, Medical Mavericks hosted a ‘Challenge the Champions’ fitness-based activities for approximately 100 students.

The purpose of the event was to raise the awareness of STEAM careers and show students that someone qualified in design could go on to work for a civil engineering company while someone that studied science could take up a career as TV presenter or programme expert.

The more flexible students are when searching for jobs, the more opportunities and choices will be open to them through this crossover of industries.

Feedback from students was all positive, with activities described as ‘fun’, ‘informative’, ‘enjoyable’ and ‘beneficial’.
