Organised by the Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT), the two day event took place on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd July in the college’s state-of-the-art beauty training facilities.
The heat saw intermediate and advanced beauty students from different colleges across the region, go head-to-head in a demonstration of their skills in a range of competition categories including Nail Enhancement, Nail Art, Face and Body Beauty Treatments and Media Make-up.
All the results were announced in the college’s Jerome’s Restaurant and Level 3 Walsall College student, Danielle Maxwell was awarded 1st place in the Advanced Nail Enhancement category, after impressing the judges with her skills.
Following her success, Danielle could now be selected to represent the college at the UK final, which take places at the NEC Skills Show in November. Once all the regional heats have taken place, the highest scoring contestants will go through to the final.
Run annually, WorldSkills UK competitions aim to encourage people across the UK to excel in their vocational skill and help to lift standards of training and performance, promoting world class skills and international competitiveness.
Danielle said: “The competition was quite intense but I just did my best and couldn’t believe it when my name was called. It’s made me a lot more confident and I hope I’ve done enough to get to the final, as to compete at the Skills Show would be an amazing experience.
Curriculum Manager for Beauty at Walsall College, Jo Small, said: “We are delighted that Danielle’s skills and expertise shone through and she won her category. It’s a great reflection of the progress she has made on her course. We are confident that she’ll make it through to the national final.
"It has also been a privilege for Walsall College to host the Beauty Therapy WorldSkills regional heat competition and showcase our outstanding facilities. The standard of competition was exceptional and I hope that all the competitors enjoyed the experience.”
