Bailey achieves a healthy first in World Skills competition

A student at Walsall College has diagnosed herself a promising career start after achieving first place in a skills competition.

Bailey Doherty took first place in the health and social care national qualifying category of World Skills UK. The 17-year-old is now waiting to discover if she has scored enough points to make it through to the competition’s national finals taking place at the NEC Birmingham in November, following by the international competition in Shanghai in 2021.

“I had no expectations about taking part in the competition – I just tried my best,” said Bailey who is starting the second year of a health and social care extended diploma course at the college.

She continued: “A lot of my competition performance was about using my instincts and staying calm, just as healthcare professionals are expected to. To have achieved first place is amazing.”

Designed by industry experts, World Skills Competitions equip apprentices and students with the world-class skills needed to help UK businesses better compete globally. As part of the competition heat held at Shipley College, Bailey had to demonstrate her healthcare expertise during three health and medical scenarios with mock patients. These included Bailey having to support a patient experiencing a stroke, a patient with a learning disability who was diabetic, as well as someone bullied financially by friends.

Jo Parton, Head of Cluster for Health and Public Services at the college added: “We’re all proud of Bailey’s success, which is all the more remarkable as this is the first time she has taken part in such an event. She proved she is more than capable of combining health and medical principles with the empathy that is an essential quality for someone representing this sector. We’re now keeping our fingers crossed that she will make it through to the national stage of the competition.”
