As part of The Black Country Impact Project, Walsall College hosted a wide range of exciting free course taster experiences for young people looking to enter education or start an apprenticeship.
The week-long event, which began on 2nd July, was organised by the College in partnership with Walsall Council. The tasters give young people a real feel of what college life is like, and to experience the things they will do during their studies.
Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities across different subjects to ensure they are choosing the right course for September.
A full college tour was also available, as well a guidance interview with our staff to discuss the visitors’ experiences and career aspirations.
The taster sessions were in a wide range of subjects, including as Hospitality and Catering, Travel and Tourism, Art and Design, Public Services, Health and Social Care, as well as Early Years.
Sessions also took place at the College’s Green Lane Campus for school leavers who have an interest in construction and engineering.
Once visitors complete their taster programme, they will receive a £15 Love to Shop voucher as a thank you for their participation.
The Impact Project was set up by local councils within the West Midlands, including Dudley, Sandwell, the City of Wolverhampton Council and Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council.
Funded by the European Social Fund and Youth Employment Initiative, the aim of the project is to tackle high numbers of youth unemployment in the Black Country. Through the project, partners hold events that give young people access to education and training that will lead to sustainable integration into the labour market.
Debbie Illidge, Senior Curriculum Leader for Employer Gateway at Walsall College, said: “We’re delighted to host this event in partnership with Walsall Council to ensure school leavers and those young people who are ‘NEET’ are given an opportunity to find a course and future that is best suited to their needs and aspirations.
As one of the most successful colleges in the country, Walsall College offer a wide range of courses and qualifications to suit our students’ career goals, from apprenticeships and vocational training to higher level study.
Our aim is to inspire students, broaden their horizons about the different jobs and career routes available and prepare them for the world of work, whilst enjoying an enriching student experience on our premises.”
