Funding, grants and government updates

There are a number of government grants available to support businesses.

Walsall College can help eligible businesses access these grants, obtaining funding to support the training their staff. Are you aware of these four grants available to local employers?

1. Additional Payments for Apprenticeships

An employer will receive a payment towards the additional cost associated with apprenticeship training if, at the start of the apprenticeship, the apprentice is:
  • aged between 16 and 18 years old (or 15 years of age if the apprentice’s 16th birthday is between the last Friday of June and 31 August)
  • aged between 19 and 24 years old and has either an education, health and care plan provided by the local authority, or has been in the care of the local authority (see paragraph 71 of The SFA Funding guide)

2. Walsall Works

Walsall Works is a multi-million pound financial investment by Walsall Council. It supports the council’s vision of creating the conditions for sustainable employment and growth within our Walsall-based businesses. Employers will be offered an incentive payment of up to £6000 to recruit a young person as an apprentice.

For any new contracts issued from 01/01/2015 employers can receive the following incentive:

£3,000 maximum for employers taking on a young person aged 16 or 17 at a rate of £4.20* ph. £4,500 maximum for employers taking on a young person aged between 18 and 20 at a rate of £5.90* ph. £6,000 maximum for employers taking on a young person aged between 21 and 24 at a rate of £7.38* ph. *Hourly rates effective from 1st October 2015
