YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Sport

This course can get you started. This qualification aims to support your development by giving you the skills and knowledge to start your career or enhance your career if you are already working within the industry, particularly if you're a sports coach.  The course will help to develop your skills to become an effective sports coach, including:

  • excellent communication skills
  • planning fun, engaging coaching activities, sessions and programmes in a safe environment
  • the ability to inspire confidence and motivate participants
  • the ability to assess and solve problems
  • determination and patience
  • good organisational skills
  • improving health and physical fitness.

4 GCSEs at grade C/GCSE grade 4 or above including English Language and/or Maths (some courses may require both, please check your individual course). Or a Level 2 related qualification.

The objectives of these qualifications are to help learners to:

  • allow learners to choose a pathway and units that reflect their career or academic aspirations
  • enter into employment in the sport and active leisure sector
  • progress onto further education programmes such as BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence) and/or higher education programmes such as the HNC/HND Level 4/5 in Sport (Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness) 
  • gain and develop essential skills that are valued by employers and higher and further education institutions.

Maths & English Requirement

English and Maths is a mandatory part of the 16-19 study programme.
If you have GCSEs in English and Maths at:

  • A* - C or 4-9 - You will continue to study English and Maths but do not have to take another exam.
  • D or 3 - You will need to resit your GCSE English and Maths at college.
  • E, F or G / 1 or 2 - You will study for Functional Skills until you get to Level 1. Then you will take GCSE English and Maths.
