The next step in the applied science program, this course prepares you for entry into either a higher education program, nursing or employment as a lab technician.
The course consists of four core units in year one:
• Fundamentals of Science
• Working in the Science Industry
• Scientific Practical Techniques
• Perceptions of Science
And two in year two:
• Science Investigation
• Application of Number for Science Technicians
Applied Science focuses on giving you an understanding of how Science underpins modern life, and it will allow you to move on to a wide range of different careers.
In class you will carry out practical tasks and also your own practical investigations which will help you to apply your knowledge of science to real life situations. You will also be able to have class discussions about topics which are currently in the news, which may have a huge impact on the world and the society in which we live.
You will study in well equipped laboratories with highly qualified staff, and we have a fantastic record of high achievement from our students. You will also able to go on various trips to a range of companies, enjoy fascinating talks from visiting speakers, and do your own field work.

Interview and initial assessment at an appropriate level. A previous Level 2 related qualification or higher GCSE results may allow direct entry, ideally 5 grade C/GCSE grade 4 including Maths, English and a Science qualification.
The BTEC National Extended Diploma in Science is suitable for learners who are interested in a career in Science. The Diploma would allow entry to a higher education qualification (degree), nursing or would lead to employment as a laboratory technician.
