Looking to enhance your cookery skills? Want to take the next step to start your career as a professional chef?

The course will get you on your way. This Level 3 qualification is for those who wish to focus on advancing their skills, so they can progress onto specialist positions within the hospitality industry. The course is also suitable for chefs with supervisory aspects to their roles, and will enable them to build upon what they already know.

The course is split into seven units, which supply students with the practical skills and knowledge necessary across all areas of the industry. These units cover various up-to-date food preparation techniques, and other essential industry knowledge such as the principles of food safety supervision.

Students will develop their existing skills in a commercial environment and gain valuable hands-on experience serving members of the public in our commercial restaurant, The Littleton. They will also be given 36 hours of external work placement in top hotels and restaurants around Birmingham and the rest of the West Midlands, providing a fantastic opportunity to gain employment in the industry for their progression.

You will need to have one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grades D to G/GCSE grades 3-1
  • A Level 2 relevant qualification.
  • Previous industry experience.

Your suitability for the course will also be discussed during an interview with a tutor.

On completion of this qualification candidates may progress into employment or to the following City & Guilds qualifications:

  • General management and supervisory qualifications
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership (7250)
  • BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma In Hospitality Management

Maths & English Requirement

English and Maths is a mandatory part of the 16-19 study programme.
If you have GCSEs in English and Maths at:

  • A* - C or 4-9 - You will continue to study English and Maths but do not have to take another exam.
  • D or 3 - You will need to resit your GCSE English and Maths at college.
  • E, F or G / 1 or 2 - You will study for Functional Skills until you get to Level 1. Then you will take GCSE English and Maths.
