Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery

Are you a hands-on person looking for a career you'll enjoy?

Carpentry could be for you and this course can get you started. This full-time Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery course is designed for learners interested in starting a career as a Carpenter or Bench Joiner in the construction industry. It will provide you with the necessary practical skills and knowledge to progress to level 2, an apprenticeship or possible employment.

With classes taking place at our WHG Construction Centre, you will learn about health and safety, as well as the principals of building construction, information and communication. You will also be taught how to use carpentry tools and will have the opportunity to engage in work experience.

To access the course you will be required to have an interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the suitability of the course.
All applicants will undertake an initial assessment to establish their level which will help decide your suitability for the course.

Upon completion of the course you will be able to progress onto Level 2 Site Carpentry, Level 2 Bench Joinery, Level 2 Shopfitting or Level 2 Maintenance Operations courses.

Maths & English Requirement

English and Maths is a mandatory part of the 16-19 study programme.
If you have GCSEs in English and Maths at:

  • A* - C or 4-9 - You will continue to study English and Maths but do not have to take another exam.
  • D or 3 - You will need to resit your GCSE English and Maths at college.
  • E, F or G / 1 or 2 - You will study for Functional Skills until you get to Level 1. Then you will take GCSE English and Maths.
