Looking to start a career in either health and social care or early years?

This course can get you started. The Level 1 Diploma will introduce you to health, social care and children and young people’s setting.

The qualification is aimed at learners who wish to develop an understanding of these settings before deciding whether working in the sector is for them. For those who feel that health and care is their calling, this course will provide you with the opportunity to progress to employment in a range of job roles in the sector.

The course will help you to develop your awareness of the types of work within these sectors, as well as the roles played by industry professionals, from principles and values through to health and safety to working with others. There is also the option to take units in more specialised areas such as learning disability, sensory loss or mental health.

Learners should be at least 16 years of age for entry.
This is a 16-18 study programme. 
Maths and English Level 1

The Level 1 Diploma in Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings allows for progression to the Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care, Level 2 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.
You could also apply for apprenticeships.

Maths & English Requirement

English and Maths is a mandatory part of the 16-19 study programme.
If you have GCSEs in English and Maths at:

  • A* - C or 4-9 - You will continue to study English and Maths but do not have to take another exam.
  • D or 3 - You will need to resit your GCSE English and Maths at college.
  • E, F or G / 1 or 2 - You will study for Functional Skills until you get to Level 1. Then you will take GCSE English and Maths.
