Functional Skills English Entry Level to Level 2

Want to improve your English communication skills? Want to upskill your writing and reading for work or higher level study?

With English skills needed in every industry this course is useful for anyone who wants to develop their speaking and listening and writing skills to upskill or get work.

You will be assessed through three units, including speaking, listening and communication unit, in which you'll be assessed by your teacher through formal and informal discussions. 

Your reading and writing units will see you assessed through an exam, which will include an on-screen test.

This course can be student from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.

When you come to enrol on a Functional Skills English course, we will ask you to complete an online initial assessment known as BKSB, as well as a short writing task.  These will then be looked at by a tutor, who will also take into account any previous English qualifications you may have. You will then be offered a course at the right level for your starting point.

Progression to a higher level English course or progression onto a vocational course.

Maths & English Requirement

English and Maths is a mandatory part of the 16-19 study programme.
If you have GCSEs in English and Maths at:

  • A* - C or 4-9 - You will continue to study English and Maths but do not have to take another exam.
  • D or 3 - You will need to resit your GCSE English and Maths at college.
  • E, F or G / 1 or 2 - You will study for Functional Skills until you get to Level 1. Then you will take GCSE English and Maths.
