Computing (Software Development) HNC

This course is highly practical and provides a strong grounding in the fundamentals of software development. It will give you a comprehensive understanding of programming in Java/C#, database design and development using MySQL, software development lifecycles and website design and development. The units of study reflect the current employment opportunities within the software development industry and the skills in-demand by employers.

A nationally recognised computing qualification, the HNC is ideal for those who have started, or are planning to move into, a career in the computing industry or who wish to progress onto a level 5 programme such as a HND.

The course also aims to develop essential and transferrable employment skills such as communication and interpersonal skills, leadership and the dynamics of working with others in teams.

A-levels or equivalent related Level 3 qualification, relevant work experience will be considered. All applicants will require an initial assessment and interview. Please apply through UCAS.

You can progress to the HND Diploma in Computing and Systems Development at Walsall College or to the second year of an honours degree, depending on the match of the HNC units to the degree course in question.

Maths & English Requirement

English and Maths is a mandatory part of the 16-19 study programme.
If you have GCSEs in English and Maths at:

  • A* - C or 4-9 - You will continue to study English and Maths but do not have to take another exam.
  • D or 3 - You will need to resit your GCSE English and Maths at college.
  • E, F or G / 1 or 2 - You will study for Functional Skills until you get to Level 1. Then you will take GCSE English and Maths.
