BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Art & Design (TOP-UP)

This is a specialised qualification in Art and Design. It gives users the ability to move into more general commercial aspects of the sector using Printmaking, 3D, Illustration, Painting etc. A range works will be supported by teaching in semiotic language - the understanding of signs, symbols and visual meaning. A large part of the course will be about learning how to develop a range of creative idea development. The aim is to offer three years of higher Education which supplies a BA Hons certified from Birmingham University. HNC (year 1) and HND (year 2) can be completed one year at a time (full time).

We can accept students onto HNC from:
A relevant HNC completion or post degree wishing to re-train.
We can accept students onto HNC from:

  • A successful completion of Foundation in Art and Design (post ‘A’ Level training)
  • A minimum of two A Levels (one of which should be in Art and Design at a ‘C’)
  • UCAS points of 240/280
  • ‘MMM’ at Extended Diploma Level 3 Art and Design

All applying students will need to have a portfolio of work and complete an interview with the tutor for the course.

This directly leads to a BCU Degree BA Hons in Visual Communication (top-up year) taught here at Walsall College entry of which will be automatic progression with a Merit gained at HND.
This may lead to (if you are interested in further progression) Cert Ed. PGCE, an MA in various Art and Design pathways and finally a Phd.

Maths & English Requirement

English and Maths is a mandatory part of the 16-19 study programme.
If you have GCSEs in English and Maths at:

  • A* - C or 4-9 - You will continue to study English and Maths but do not have to take another exam.
  • D or 3 - You will need to resit your GCSE English and Maths at college.
  • E, F or G / 1 or 2 - You will study for Functional Skills until you get to Level 1. Then you will take GCSE English and Maths.
